14 Amazing years

14 Amazing Years!

Friday, August 31st will be the last day of our clearance sale. We will stay open from 11am until 8pm for any last minute customers who would like to drop by. We will offer refreshments. Urbanity will re-open on September 17th under the new ownership of Nina Dolleris. I have been working closely with Nina to make the transition as seamless as possible, and I am excited about Urbanity’s future.

It has been a very busy 2 months, and we are overwhelmed by how well our sale has gone, and how many wonderful well-wishers have come in.  It means so much that Urbanity has become so important to so many of you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the appreciation you have expressed.

I look forward to having more time to spend in my wonderful Gastown condo, and my fabulous kitchen….more time with my family in Toronto, and friends here and afar, but also more time to spread the word about Urbanity.  I will continue to look after the website, social media, and write newsletters — and to reach out to the press both print and digital to create an awareness of Urbanity.  Nina will carry the same brands that I have been carrying, and more.

Don’t be surprised if you meet me in the little shop on South Granville!!

Love and hugs to you all!

Big Huge News!

Urbanity opened in Gastown in December 2004 bringing beautiful clothes to Vancouver made by caring hands from natural materials.

The clothes we carry are ethically made in small factories and workshops from quality fabrics, designed by women with strong values.

In May 2010 Urbanity moved to the 2400 block of South Granville. It was a good move.  Our customer base now extends across Canada and beyond.  We realize that we are a link in a chain of smaller independent shops found all around the world, run by hard-working (mostly) women who have a similar philosophy.

We are excited to announce that in September 2018 Urbanity will have a new owner.  Nina Dolleris has been working in Urbanity for more than a year. Six months ago, Nina expressed the wish to take over the shop.  She feels at one with the concept, and is excited to steer Urbanity into the future.  Nina is a tenacious Dane, and I am delighted she is taking over.

Urbanity will continue to carry the same brands that you have come to know and love, including OLEANA.  Nina will be bringing in new brands that have the same concern for design, quality, sustainability, and are fair-made: made by people being paid a living wage.

For a period of time, I will team up with Nina to look after the social media, the website, and continuing to write the newsletters. Urbanity is a little shop that is a big job to run, and I am confident Nina has the energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity, to do it.

The shop will close for a couple of weeks in September and will open again filled to the brim with wonderful colourful clothes, and masses of accessories for the cooler weather.

Thank you for making Urbanity successful.  Its been a fabulous journey, and I am so excited to see how the shop evolves.

7th Annual South Granville Art Walk

We are delighted to have Gibson Artist Paula O’Brien showing her work in Urbanity this June during the 7th South Granville Art Walk.  Paula is an energetic and diverse artist, networker, web-builder.  Her enthusiasm is contagious. She is a very active member of her community, always ready to be involved with a project at the same time as she pursues her ever developing artistic expression.  I am particularly delighted that Paula is showing in Urbanity, because many years ago she was my student at John Abbott College, Montreal.  Please take a wander through Paula’s website to learn more about her work and activities.  www.paulaobrien.com

News from Norway

A recent visit to the Oleana Factory

A few weeks ago I was in Norway on the occasion of Oleana’s 25th Anniversary. It was 5 years since I had been to the factory. In 2012 they were still in the process of  moving into the fabulous building from 1842 that had been a cotton processing, spinning, and weaving factory for more than 100 years.

I started my relationship with Oleana in July 2004 when I went to Norway to meet the owners and discuss opening a shop in Vancouver — which I did on December 8th of the same year. I became the Canadian rep in 2007. From when I became rep, we had at the most 6 stores carrying Oleana products in Canada. Today we are two. Urbanity, and Lila Lupo in Toronto.

In all these years there have been strict rules about sharing information about prices on the internet. Selling on line was strictly prohibited. Now the founders have moved aside and the company has been taken over by younger members of the family and an on-line shop has been launched.

Depending where you are when you open the Oleana website, you will get different information. It is not possible to buy on line in all countries. The on-line shop has been launched for Canada, and as of January 1st, Oleana will no longer have a Canadian rep. To be clear, Urbanity will certainly continue to carry Oleana, as we have since 2004.

It is of course my hope that Canadians wanting to buy Oleana, will approach shops in Canada selling the collection before ordering from Norway. We are working on getting images of all our Oleana stock up on our website — because we have a lot of Oleana stock!! At this time, we have not yet managed to post images of the scarves, wristlets, the alpaca collection, and blankets. It takes time, but it will get done!! Please write or call if you have any questions.  See www.urbanity.ca/oleana-in-stock/

I believe the on-line shop will ultimately make more people outside Scandinavia familiar with the Oleana brand which is really good!
